 History of Acculab, Inc.

Acculab, Inc had a humble beginning in 1991 when a college professor wanted a summer project to get him out of the house. At that time Randall Carpenter paid a visit to a friend who owned a local coal testing facility in Logan West Virginia.

George Boytek, proprietor of then Commercial Coal Testing, informed Randy that he needed someone who could provide water-testing services for a very good client. So, for a small investment to purchase laboratory equipment, chemical supplies and a Spec 20, Acculab, inc. was born. Originally the lab was operated by Randy and his daughter, Angie, a few days a month out of an 8'× 12' room of a singlewide trailer and remained a division of Commercial Coal testing until accredidation and certification was obtained.

Once accredited and certified through the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) the lab was enabled to collect, analyze and perform reporting duties for NPDES Permits (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Permits). Municipalities and industrial businesses that discharge treated and storm water into receiving streams and rivers hold this type of permit.

As business continued to grow for both testing facilities, Acculab added several local coal corporations to its list of clients. finally the decision was made mutually by George and Randy to expand their interests and thus the lab split from Commercial Coal Testing. At this time the name became official and with the growth in business new clients and full-time employees were added. All operations, at this time, were only being conducted out of a singlewide trailer. After five years of operation, an additional office trailer was purchased for administrative and clerical staff. A small building was erected to serve as a receiving and log in area to prep samples and a graphite furnace was added to the lab for more precise metal analysis. All this was accompanied by further certification for additional testing parameters including heavy metals and bacteriological analysis.

Over a decade from it's humble origin, the lab out grew it's complex of small trailers and annex buildings and moved to it's current location in a renovated grade school building in Mount Gay, West Virginia. This provided sufficient space to handle increased demand by our clients and the increasing number of employees.

Shortly into the new millennium Acculab was awarded a contract from the Office of Surface mining and the WVDEP to perform a Trend Study on over 230 streams, creeks and rivers throughout the state of West Virginia. At this time, Acculab added a Biology Department for the taxanomic identification and reporting of macro-invertebrates (Benthics). As a result of this prestigious contract additional office trailers were purchased for both the new Biology Department and Field Technician Office.

Currently the volume of samples has swelled to over 5,000 per month, servicing the needs of nearly 100 Coal Operaators with a staff of approximately 30 employees with diverse educational and work related experience. Currently our staff includes several professionals with advanced degrees in Chemistry and Biology, as well as, two former WVDEP mining inspectors.

Currently plans have stalled as we await word from our local county commission for the proposed expansion for our facility at a nearby industrial park.

Acculab continues to experience growth throughout the national economic recession.  This is in large part to our Coal Mining Client's here in Southern West virginia.

Welcome to Acculab, we look forward to providing you with the service you expect and the quality you deserve.
